No, Sarah Fuller was NOT the first woman to score in a major college football game. It was rape victim Katie Hnida in 2002.

First of all, congrats to Sarah Fuller for recently scoring some extra points for Vanderbilt University this year. It's a significant accomplishment in a male dominated sport.

But, despite all of the surrounding hoopla, did you know she was NOT the first woman to score points in a major college football game?

That distinction belongs to Katie Hnida, who, after making the team and transferring from Colorado University to New Mexico, both NCAA Division 1-A members - the top level in college football - scored two extra points in a game. In 2002. Nearly twenty years ago.

Ever wonder why you don't hear about Katie Hnida from the male dominated college football publicity machine? Ever wonder why it's all about Sarah Fuller? Ever wonder why the small print says that Sarah Fuller was the first female kicker to score in a Power-5 game (and not a Division 1-A game)?

It's because while at Colorado University, she was raped by a teammate. And sexually harassed. And more.

Understand now?
